As a veterinarian specializing in cats, I find that the presence of a foul or clients will describe a funky, musky, “fishy” odor occasionally emanating from their cat. “If I suspect that anal gland secretion is the cause of the mysterious odor, I will.
Cats have two anal glands, one on either side of the anus, that produce a musky or fishy smelling material. Under normal circumstances, pet parents are barely.

I've never noticed this on him before There doesn't appear to be anything swollen or inflamed, no scootching of the butt or anything like that.
